When is a tetanus booster recommended for kids after a cut or puncture, and can you administer it during a visit?

Dirty cuts, animal bites, or punctures like stepping on a nail can push tetanus-causing bacteria deep under the skin. For children who completed the standard DTaP/Tdap schedule, the CDC recommends a booster (Tdap or Td) if more than five years have passed since the last dose, or immediately if vaccination history is uncertain. The sooner the better—ideally within 24–48 hours of the injury.

Because Prime Time Pediatrics Urgent Care is Athens-Oconee’s only pediatric urgent care, we keep tetanus vaccine in stock every day. During one quick visit our pediatricians will clean the wound and give the booster right away so you don’t have to schedule another appointment.
