What should parents know about fever reducers and dosing based on a child’s age or weight?

We often remind parents that the safest way to give a fever reducer is to dose strictly by weight. Use an accurate scale, then check the medication label or dosing chart to confirm that the dosage (usually in mg or mg/mL) is appropriate for your child’s weight.

Never guess with kitchen spoons—always use the syringe or cup packaged with the product. If your child takes other combination cold medicines, make sure they do not already contain acetaminophen or ibuprofen to avoid double dosing. Avoid aspirin completely in children because of the risk of Reye syndrome.
