When is a tetanus booster recommended for kids after a cut or puncture, and can you administer it during a visit?

Quick Answer

Most children need a tetanus booster if it has been 5 years or more since their last shot and they suffer a dirty cut or puncture. Our board-certified pediatric providers can give the booster on the spot during the same urgent care visit, sparing you an extra trip and protecting your child quickly.

Detailed Answer

Dirty cuts, animal bites, or punctures like stepping on a nail can push tetanus-causing bacteria deep under the skin. For children who completed the standard DTaP/Tdap schedule, the CDC recommends a booster (Tdap or Td) if more than five years have passed since the last dose, or immediately if vaccination history is uncertain. The sooner the better—ideally within 24–48 hours of the injury.
